WA-006: The Weed Secret — Why Your Soil is "Choosing" to Grow Weeds

Today, let’s use real soil science to solve the first big nightmare: Weeds.
What is a Weed, Really?
The legendary soil scientist Dr. William A. Albrecht said it best:
"Weeds are plants growing on soils too low in fertility for other kinds of plant growth."
In plain English, weeds are nature's unpaid mineral collectors. They only show up when your soil is broken, deficient, or completely out of balance.
Look at it from two different angles:
- The Farmer’s View: Weeds are annoying thieves stealing water and fertilizer from my main crop. They must be destroyed!
- Nature’s View: This soil is sick and compacted. Let me send these tough weeds to mine minerals from deep below, break up the hard earth, and heal the land.
A weed is simply a plant that the soil thinks ought to grow, while the farmer thinks it ought to be removed. To control weeds without spending a fortune on labor or weedicides, you have to understand why your soil is begging for them.
The Chemical Trap: The Urea Cycle
If your field is being choked by aggressive grass weeds, blame your Urea bag.
Urea is a powerful nitrogen salt. When you dump it into the soil, it converts into nitrate nitrogen and grabs onto your soil's Calcium, forming Calcium Nitrate. This compound is highly unstable—as soon as it rains or you irrigate, it washes away deep into the earth, stealing your valuable Calcium along with it.
When Calcium drops, Magnesium takes over. Combined with heavy plowing and the harsh heat generated by chemical salts, your soil turns into Hardpan—a tight, suffocating layer like a concrete slab underground.
Nature’s Response: Nature hates hardpan. So it sends grass weeds with fierce, needle-like roots to pierce right through that concrete layer and break it up. If you have a massive grass weed problem, your soil is screaming: "Stop dumping salt fertilizers! My minerals are totally out of balance!"
The Organic Trap: The Potassium Overload
"Fine, I’ll stop chemicals and dump tons of organic compost and cattle manure instead!"
Wait. This is where well-meaning organic farmers trip up. Traditional farmyard manure and compost are incredibly rich in Potassium. When you blindly apply loads of it without a soil test, Potassium skyrockets.

99% விவசாயிகள் ஏன் ரசாயன விவசாயத்தை விட்டு வெளியே வர பயப்பட்றாங்க? அவங்களுக்கு ரசாயன மருந்து வாங்க ரொம்ப ஆசைன்னு இல்ல. அதுக்கு பின்னாடி ரெண்டு நியாயமான பயம் இருக்கு: ஒன்று, கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாத களைகள் (Weeds); ரெண்டு, நைட்ரஜன் சத்து குறைஞ்சு மகசூல் அடியோட சரிஞ்சுடுமோன்ற கவலை;
இயற்கை விவசாயம் பேசுறவங்க பெரும்பாலும் "ரசாயனம் கெட்டது, இயற்கை நல்லது"னு சொல்லுவாங்க. ஆனா, அதை பண்ற விவசாயியின் வாழ்வாதாரத்துக்கு, அது சரியான்னு சொல்ல மாட்டாங்க. ஒரு விவசாய முறை நல்ல வருமானத்தையும், சுலபமான களை கட்டுப்பாட்டையும், சிறந்த மகசூலையும் கொடுக்கலனா, எந்த ஒரு விவசாயியும் அதை ஏத்துக்க மாட்டார். அதனால தான் இயற்கை விவசாயம் இன்னும் பெயரளவில் இருக்கு. நெல்லை தாண்டி அது பெயரளவுக்கு கூட இல்ல அப்டின்றது தான் கசப்பான உண்மை.

நிஜமாவே 'களை' அப்படின்னா என்ன?
உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற மண் விஞ்ஞானி டாக்டர் வில்லியம் ஆல்பிரெக்ட் ஒரு விளக்கம் குடுத்திருக்கார்:

இதை ரெண்டு பக்கத்துல இருந்து பாருங்க:
- விவசாயியின் பார்வை: களைகள் என் பயிருக்கு வைக்கிற உரத்தையும் தண்ணியையும் திருடுற திருடர்கள். இதை உடனே அழிக்கணும்!
- இயற்கையின் பார்வை: இந்த மண் ரொம்ப இருக்கமாவும் சத்து இல்லாமலும் கிடக்கு. அதான் ஆழமான வேர் இருக்குற களைகளை அனுப்பி, மண்ணைத் தளர்த்தி, சத்துக்களை மேலே கொண்டு வந்து பூமியைக் குணப்படுத்துறேன்.
மண் எந்தச் செடியை வளர்க்கணும்னு நினைக்குதோ அது 'களை'; விவசாயி எந்தச் செடியை எடுக்கணும்னு நினைக்குறாரோ அது 'களை'. ஆள் கூலி இல்லாம, களைக்கொல்லி அடிக்காம இதைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தணும்னா, முதல்ல உங்க மண் ஏன் இந்த களைகளைக் கேக்குதுன்னு நீங்க புரிஞ்சுக்கணும்.
ரசாயன விவசாய வலை: யூரியா சுழற்சி (The Urea Cycle)

யூரியான்றது ஒரு கடுமையான நைட்ரஜன் உப்பு. அதை நிலத்துல போடும்போது, அது மண்ணுல இருக்குற கால்சியத்தோட (Calcium) சேர்ந்து 'கால்சியம் நைட்ரேட்'டா மாறுது. இது தண்ணீரில் ரொம்ப வேகமா கரையக்கூடியது. நீங்க தண்ணி பாய்ச்சும் போதோ இல்ல மழை பெய்யும் போதோ, இது அப்படியே பூமிக்கு அடியில அடிச்சிட்டு போயிடும். அப்படிப் போகும்போது மண்ணுல இருக்குற நல்ல கால்சியத்தையும் அது கூடவே திருடிட்டு போயிடும்.
மண்ணுல கால்சியம் குறையும் போது, மெக்னீசியத்தோட (Magnesium) ஆதிக்கம் அதிகமாகிடும். இதோட நீங்க அடிக்கடி டிராக்டர் வச்சு உழும்போது, மண்ணுக்கு அடியில "ஹார்டுபேன்" (Hardpan) அப்படின்னு சொல்ற ஒரு பாறை போன்ற இருக்கமான அடுக்கு உருவாகிடும். சிமெண்ட் தரை மாதிரி இருக்குற அந்த அடுக்குக்குள்ள காற்றோட்டமோ, உயிரோட்டமோ இருக்காது.
இயற்கையின் பதில்: பூமிக்கு இந்த இருக்கமான தரை பிடிக்காது. உடனே அது கூர்மையான, மொரட்டு வேர்கள் இருக்குற புல் வகை களைகளை அனுப்பி, அந்த சிமெண்ட் பாறையை உடைக்கப் பார்க்கும். இது ஏன் அப்படின்னா கால்சியம் மண்ணுக்கு அடில போயிடும். அதை வேர் மூலமா எடுத்து மண்ணுக்கு மேல போடற வேலைய தான் இந்த களைகள் முக்கியமா செய்யுது. உங்க நிலத்துல புல் களைகள் அதிகமா இருந்தா, உங்க மண் கத்தி சொல்லுது: "தயவுசெஞ்சு ரசாயன உப்பை நிறுத்தங்க! என் மினரல் பேலன்ஸ் மொத்தமா கெட்டுப் போகுது!"
இயற்கை விவசாய வலை: பொட்டாசியம் ஓவர்லோடு
"சரிப்பா... நான் ரசாயனத்தை நிறுத்திட்டு, லோடு லோடா மாட்டுச் சாணத்தையும் கம்போஸ்ட்டையும் கொட்டுறேன்" அப்படின்னு நீங்க கிளம்புனா... அங்கதான் இயற்கை விவசாயிகளும் ஏமாறுறாங்க.
நம்ம போடுற தொழுவுரத்துல பொட்டாசியம் (Potassium) சத்து ரொம்ப அதிகமா இருக்கும். மண் பரிசோதனை செய்யாம, குத்துமதிப்பா டன் கணக்குல எருவை அள்ளிப் போடும்போது, மண்ணுல பொட்டாசியம் அளவு தாறுமாறா உயரும்.
பொட்டாசியம் அளவுக்கு அதிகமா போனா, அது மண்ணுல இருக்குற கொஞ்ச நஞ்ச கால்சியத்தையும் வேரை எடுக்க விடாம லாக் பண்ணிடும். (இத விவசாய அறிவியல்ல "ஊட்டச்சத்து முரண்பாடு" (Nutrient Antagonism) அப்படின்னு சொல்லுவாங்க). மறுபடியும் மண்ணோட பேலன்ஸ் தப்பாகுதா... உடனே இயற்கை அலாரத்தை ஆன் பண்ணி, அந்த சத்து குறைபாட்டை சரி செய்ய களைகளை முளைக்க வச்சிடும்!
நாம புரிஞ்சுக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம்:
களைக்கொல்லி அடிக்கிறதுனாலயோ இல்ல ஆள் வச்சு வெட்டுறதுனாலயோ களைகளை நிரந்தரமா ஒழிக்க முடியாது. களைகள்ன்றது மண்ணுக்குள்ள இருக்குற சத்து குறைபாட்டோட ஒரு அறிகுறி (Symptom). நீங்க யூரியா போட்டாலும் சரி, சாணம் போட்டாலும் சரி... மண்ணோட கால்சியம், மெக்னீசியம், பொட்டாசியம் விகிதம் தப்பா இருந்தா களைகள் வரத்தான் செய்யும்.
இதைச் சரி செய்யுற அறிவியல் ஏற்கனவே இருக்கு. உங்க மண்ணோட CEC அளவுக்கு ஏத்த மாதிரி மினரல்களை நாம பேலன்ஸ் செஞ்சுட்டா, மண் உங்க முக்கிய பயிருக்கு (மா, வாழை, தென்னைக்கு) சொர்க்கமாகவும், களைகளுக்கு நரகமாகவும் மாறிடும். களைகளோட சண்டை போடுறதை நிறுத்திட்டு, மண்ணோட பேலன்ஸை மாத்துவோம்!
