VV-028: Biochar — The Truth for Farmers!
Today, in modern natural farming pages, we frequently hear a word — Biochar. It is advertised as a magic material that will permanently remove soil drought, lock carbon into the earth, and double your yield in a single day.
It is true that all these advertisements are grand. But, what is the real profit of this in the field? It has not yet been precisely proven, and it remains confusing.
As your advisor, it is my duty to break down the real science for you without any confusion. Biochar is indeed a wonderful material, but if you use it incorrectly... it will completely empty out your soil's chemistry in the very first season!
Let us now look at the truths.
1. What is Biochar? (The Real Structure)
Biochar is nothing else; it is a pure charcoal produced by burning coconut shells, wood waste, or crop residues in a closed container without oxygen, at very high temperatures (from 400°C to 700°C). In English, this is called Pyrolysis.
What is its final form... it is 100% non-degradable stable carbon. If you look at this under a microscope... it will be like a massive hotel with lakhs of tiny empty rooms and a strong negative charge.
Since this is stable carbon, it will not decompose inside the soil; it will stay right there in your land for hundreds of years.
2. The Big Danger: Raw Biochar is a Nutrient Thief!
This is where our local farmers make a huge mistake: They buy the biochar sold in shops, bring it, and directly dump it into the field.
Because biochar has lakhs of empty rooms and empty negative charges inside... it acts exactly like a dry sponge. When you put this raw charcoal directly into the soil, it will rapidly absorb the water, nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients present in your soil from your crop's root zone and lock them up inside itself!
Instead of enriching the soil, this raw biochar will cause an immediate nutrient deficiency for your crop. The crop will turn yellow and its growth will stall. Why? Because all those hotel rooms are empty, and to fill them, it steals the food that should go to the plant!
3. Charging / Enrichment: Feed the Biochar First! (Charging / Inoculation)
Biochar is not a fertilizer; it is a 'natural house' where nutrients reside. Before inviting the crop into the house, we must fill the house with nutrients.
To use biochar without loss, we must "Charge" it at least 2 to 4 weeks before putting it into the soil.
Precise Charging Formula (for 100 kg of Biochar):
- Filling with Microbes + Nitrogen: Mix 100 kg of raw biochar with 300 kg of well-decomposed manure or poultry manure; or pour our local forest leaf microbial solution (Forest biology / Jadham microbial solution) into it and soak it well.
- Mineral Balance: Add a little rock phosphate and humic acid to this.
- Soaking: Keep this mixture with slight moisture, stir it once every few days, and let it decompose like that for 21 days.
During these 21 days, lakhs of beneficial microbes will go and settle inside the empty rooms of that charcoal; the negative charge will hold onto the nitrogen and phosphorus that would otherwise evaporate into the air and balance them. Now that sponge is completely soaked and filled with nutrients! Now, when you put this 'charged biochar' into the soil, it will not steal anything from the soil; instead, it will slowly keep providing the food and microbes needed for your crop's roots like a permanent monthly salary for the next several decades!
What We Must Understand: Should We Spend Money on This?
Here is the final truth:
- If your land is very sandy soil, or a very light soil that cannot hold onto nutrients and water at all... then this charged biochar is an excellent long-term investment. It will permanently change your soil's structure.
- But, if your land is already good alluvial or clay-mixed soil... spending so much money to buy and spread biochar will not give you any major economic profit (ROI). You could spend that money on cover crop mixtures for biodiversity, or on whatever is needed for the crop in your land to grow vigorously.
Stop running after magic miracles in farming. Understand the physics of charcoal, charge it first, and only invest money in places that suit the data!
